What happens at the moment you make an important phone call in the presence of your children? They want your undivided attention? I remember it well.
Put together a "Telephone Treasure Chest" to be used only when you're on the phone.
Pack it with special markers, clay, coloring books, toy phones and other goodies you save for your telephone time. Rename the treasure chest as you need: Bath Treasure Chest, Someone's at the Door Treasure Chest, Headache Treasure Chest.
